Course Description

This 60-hour course meets the training requirements of CCHI and NBCMI, the two organizations that certify healthcare interpreters in the U.S. Here are some highlights of the course:

  • Live, instructor-led online training
  • Language-supportive program—speakers of all languages are welcome
  • Choose a course that meets once a week for 10 weeks OR a course that meets twice a week for about 6 weeks (a more intensive course)
  • Students must attend ALL live instructor sessions on designated days

PREREQUISITE: InterpreterEd.com Bilingual Assessment

This comprehensive and challenging training program prepares you to become a medical interpreter. In this course, you will learn all of the information needed to pass your national certification exam. You will:

  • Complete purpose-driven learning assignments
  • Engage in meaningful learning experiences
  • Practice interpreting skills with a language coach and your classmates
  • Focus on carefully curated medical terminology
  • Receive helpful guidance from your instructor and language coach


Students will need to attend all class sessions, properly complete all assignments, and successfully pass the final exam to receive a certificate of completion.

MANDATORY: ALL students must be logged in on time. Your webcam must be ON for the entirety of the class sessions.


The Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters owns the certification marks CHI™ and Certified Healthcare Interpreter™ in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CCHI’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.

Marisol Lomeli, CHI™-Spanish

For 25 years, Marisol worked for the Los Angeles Superior Court (10 years in criminal proceedings and 15 years in civil litigation). She completed a certification program at California State University, Los Angeles in legal interpretation and translation. Soon after, she completed the InterpreterEd.com 40-hour Medical Healthcare Interpreter Training program and became nationally certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). She also completed a domestic violence advocate training program to work as an interpreter in women's shelters and for other women’s advocacy causes. 🔷 Marisol is currently an independent contractor working as a certified healthcare Interpreter with extensive experience in video, phone, and in-person interpreting, specializing in simultaneous interpretation. She is an active member and volunteer for the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA) and member of the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA) and the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). 🔷 As an accomplished instructor for InterpreterEd.com, Marisol also contributes to the company’s program development efforts.

Lourdes Cerna, CHI™-Spanish, CMI-Spanish

Lourdes is a certified medical Spanish interpreter and translator. She has 30 years of combined experience working with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. Lourdes is certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI). 🔷 She is also an active medical interpreter trainer: She was a lead adjunct professor at Mt. San Antonio College Health Care Interpreter Training Program and is currently an instructor for the InterpreterEd.com Medical Healthcare Interpreter Training program. 🔷 Lourdes works as a freelance Spanish interpreter. She has extensive experience with workers’ compensation cases, conference interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation, including over-the-phone interpreting and working with LanguageLine Solutions and Health Care Interpreter Network (HCIN) in video remote interpreting.

Mdalalah Abuhadba, CHI™-Arabic

Mdalalah was born in the United States and moved to an Arab country, to the city of Jerusalem, at the age of 10. While there, she learned to read, write, and speak Arabic fluently. At the age of 19, she returned to the United States. She completed her college education at Middle Tennessee State University, majoring in child development and family studies with a minor in early education. 🔷 Her 15 years of interpreting experience includes volunteer and professional work. In her volunteer work with Arab refugees and immigrants, she interpreted all types of encounters, including medical encounters. Mdalalah also taught English and Arabic as a second language. She worked with students of a range of ages, from kindergarten to high school age. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she also served as an academic supporter for a non-profit organization. 🔷 She began her professional work in interpreting with therapy services for children. Her role as an advocate/interpreter for Arab-only speaking families included document/form translations and evaluations. Following this position, she worked as an independent contractor with different companies as an Arabic interpreter. She performed over-the-phone, virtual, and face-to-face interpreting. Mdalalah continues to work as an interpreter and further develop herself in this career.
